LOWELL — A Lowell police detective recounted seeing the body of 36‑year‑old John Wayne Potter “stuffed” into a basement chest freezer — folded in half, only his upper torso visible — when investigators executed a search warrant at the home at 190 Coburn St. in December 2022.
“I use the word ‘stuffed,’ because he appeared to have been folded in half and only his upper torso and back were visible at the top of the freezer,” Detective Sgt. Nathan Bowler said from the stand in Middlesex Superior Court on Tuesday. “The top half of his body, including his arms, and the bottom half of his body, including his legs, were stuffed in the rest of the freezer and were not visible.”
Bowler described the discovery while testifying during a suppression hearing for Michael Burke, who is charged alongside Samantha Perry with Potter’s murder. The hearing before Judge Kenneth Salinger focused on whether statements Burke made to police after the grisly discovery should be excluded from trial.
